Peter and Grace Make a Difference

Peter and Grace Make a Difference is a book for children written by Anton Lutz and illustrated by Gazellah Bruder. It tells the story of two young children, Peter and Grace, who go on a journey of discovery about sorcery accusation related violence after their Aunty is accused in their village. The children speak with many people – a teacher, a doctor, a police officer, a missionary, members of their community, and also their friends and family. Their teacher is a guide through Peter and Grace’s journey to understand that the accusations of sorcery should not be believed, and gives them support to uncover the truth and find their own answers.

Each person in the story has a different perspective to share with Peter and Grace and the two children learn to think for themselves about the problems of sorcery accusation related violence. The story encourages children who hear or read the book to decide what their journey will be in combatting sorcery accusation related violence.

The book is filled with wonderful, colourful illustrations by Gazellah Bruder that will engage children from all across the primary and even secondary school years. For those able to read alone, it can be a useful resource in the classroom and school library and it can be read at home on a mobile device. For those children who are not yet able to read, teachers, parents and older siblings can read it out loud to them.

For more information on the background to Anton’s book and the film made from it, please check out Anton Lutz’s blog post here.

Last but definitely not least, we share Llane Munau’s film based on the book, also titled Peter and Grace Make a Difference. Scroll down after the materials provided below to see it. This film could be watched as a companion piece after reading the book, or if you prefer, you could watch it first and then read the book. Compare notes to find some differences!

We hope you enjoy the book Peter and Grace Make a Difference and accompanying resources and find these fun educational materials to be a useful resource. And we’d love to hear what you think – send us your comments and suggestions! (info[at]stopsorceryviolence.org)

Colouring book

For everyone: To help round off the lesson plan or to enthuse the children to interact more with the characters of Peter and Grace, we attach a colouring book. This colouring book follows the story with some extra features for the children to colour in as they please. This book will require printing onto paper so that children can colour in the pages.

Film

This is the feature film version of Peter and Grace Make a Difference, filmed and produced by Llane Munau and is based on Anton Lutz’s book of the same name. It was filmed in Arawa, Bougainville with the children and youths from Llane Munau’s organisation ‘Voice in the Wilderness’. As with the book, the film addresses ‘Sorcery Accusation Related Violence’ (SARV) and features Peter and Grace finding out more about SARV challenges within their own village and community.
